Radiation Detection

A dirty bomb or radiological dispersal device (RDD) is recognized as a major terrorist threat. A relatively small amount of radioactive material combined with explosives could result in an RDD. Detonation would cause immediate and long-term physical harm. It would also cause maximum economic, sociological and psychological disruption, requiring years of radioactive shrapnel cleanup before the area could be safely used again. Depending on the location of the attack, the financial impact could exceed $100 million. Not only can the necessary radiological material be smuggled into the country, many commercial sites such as hospitals, food irradiators and research facilities at universities store more than enough to make a dirty bomb.

Defentect's DM3TM unattended gamma radiation detection architecture and alert system integrates data from a wide-area pervasive grid of sensors to an incident command center. It is networked using IP and managed over the Web. When high energy gamma rays from dirty bomb components interact with Defentect's GammatectTM family of sensors, proprietary algorithms analyze the data and alert authorities to radiation that may pose a security threat. Communication features of DM3TM provide the ability to receive and process data over the Web from the radiation sensor to the command center as well as to PDAs, cellphones or pagers.
